Hiking is generally not a dangerous activity if you prepare well. However, there are times when you will be far from “civilization” and you may get hurt or something else will happen. In order to climb safely, the following safety tips should always be observed.

1. Don’t Climb Alone

This may not be important if you’re just going on a leisurely hike in a local park, but if you’re going to venture into the woods, canyons, or other more difficult areas, you shouldn’t be traveling alone.

Hiking with a partner can offer many advantages. Couples tend to be less anxious when faced with problems or setbacks, and they can offer to help each other climb steep inclines, cross rivers, or other points of difficulty.

If an injury does occur, partners can hike back up to the trailhead for assistance. And when needed, it is easier for two people to conserve their body heat than it is for one person to do so.

2. Future Plans

Make sure you are familiar with the area you are going to. Even if you’ve never hiked there before, you can use maps and guidebooks to “survey” the area before setting off.

It’s also helpful to talk to other hikers who’ve been there to find out if there are any tricky points you should be aware of beforehand. The internet is a great place to do some basic research about an area, especially if it’s not close to where you live.

Make sure you bring the appropriate climbing gear. This includes the basics like a map, compass and water but you should also plan ahead by picking up first aid supplies, some basic supplies and proper gear in case you get stuck overnight.

It’s always better to prepare for the worst case and not need it than to plan for the best and find out that you were wrong.

3. Practice Common Sense

Hiking is a great sport, but make sure your common sense goes with it too. Don’t be overconfident while on the road and do things that are risky or stupid.

Make sure you tell others where you’re going and when you’ll be back. If no one knows you went or where you are, they won’t be able to help you if you don’t come back as expected.
