What is a distribution panel board, and what does it do?

A panelboard is an electrical distribution system component that separates an electrical power feed into branch circuits while also providing each circuit with a protective circuit breaker or fuse in a single enclosure.

What is the objective of a distribution panel?

Circuits from several places are combined in one central hub via distribution panels. This allows you to access your home’s overall electrical grid from a single location. The electricity for all circuits is controlled by a single main power switch in a distribution panel.

The meter(s) and, in some cases (particularly in which the supply utilities enforce a TT earthing system and tariff requirements that restrict the maximum permitted current consumption), an incoming supply discrepancy circuit-breaker with an overcurrent trip are usually included on distribution boards (generally only one in residential premises). The consumer has free access to this circuit breaker.

Your electrical panels must have three components to ensure that electricity is delivered to your home and that the appropriate amount of electricity is used to power your appliances.

Your main electrical panel system is made up of these three systems working together:

  • Circuit Breakers
  • Main Breakers
  • Bus Bars

The proportion of energy required to power various gadgets varies. So, how does your distribution panel ensure that the proper volume of power is distributed to each of your home or business’s subsidiary circuits? Your breaker panel is in charge of sending the proper amount of electricity to each circuit.

Main Breakers

Main breakers are massive double-pole circuit breakers that may control how much energy enters your home from the outside. The main breaker’s principal function is to ensure that a controlled amount of electricity is delivered to your home or company from outside power lines.

If you don’t have a primary breaker, your distribution board system could be overwhelmed by the raw force of unregulated electricity. Your cables would fry, your appliances may explode, and an electrical fire would almost certainly start if you didn’t have sufficient controls.

Main breakers are an important part of your distribution board system because they regulate the flow of electricity in your home.

Circuit Breakers

Circuit breakers control the flow of power into your home. When you turn off one of the circuit breakers, the energy to the corresponding appliance is turned off as well. Circuit breakers link to certain products in your home and provide power to them. Circuit breakers have an On/Off switch. Anything connected to that breaker switch will turn off once you turn it off.

Bus Bars

Electricity is transferred from the electrical metre to the simple circuits of your distribution board through bus bars. Two broad, black cables that transport power from the electrical metre will power the bus bars. The power can be carried to their intended circuits once it is accepted by the bus bars.

Bus bars are divided into two categories:

  • Neutral Bus Bars: This component connects to the neutral wire of the main circuit.
  • Grounding Bus Bars: They link all the grounding wires from the breaker panels to the ground bar. The grounding bar is also connected to the subsurface grounding conductor.4
