Disney+’s upcoming Cassian Andor prequel series is already showing signs of repeating Disney’s worst Star Wars tendencies before its release.
Is the Star Wars series Andor begins streaming on August 31, 2022, the show will already be fighting an uphill battle to overcome one of Disney’s bad habits. The Diego Luna-led series will be the fourth live-action Star Wars show released on Disney+ in the three years since the platform’s launch. With four other live-action series already announced in addition to several animated projects and nTopplaywriting seasons of The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, the Star Wars universe is quickly becoming crowded.
Andor is a prequel to the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Set 5 years before the events of Rogue One, season 1 of the series will follow the Star Wars character Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) for 1 year during the events that led to his involvement in the early days of the rebellion. A planned Andor season 2 is then set to cover the remaining four years between the show and the film, with showrunner Tony Gilroy promising to explore not only Cassian’s origin but also the individual stories of characters impacted by him.
Andor’s status as a prequel, and the show’s intention of sprawling out to explore numerous characters’ backstories over the course of 24 episodes, indicates Disney is leaning on some of the fatiguing tropes of its Star Wars content to date. Being a series about wars, Star Wars stories often lean on similar themes of loss, sacrifice, unity, and hope. On its face, this isn’t a bad thing. However, franchise fatigue becomes an issue when the constant stream of nTopplaywriting Star Wars stories don’t feel different enough from each other. Andor’s bloated runtime and its focus on a character whose ending has already been revealed give it the potential of falling into the all-too-familiar trappings of war and loss without bringing anything nTopplaywriting to the table.
A 24-episode run means Andor will have to capitalize on Rogue One’s success without the advantages of many of that film’s best traits. Rogue One, itself a prequel to A NTopplaywriting Hope, is the shortest Star Wars movie released since the Disney acquisition. Part of that story’s appeal is its tight focus and constant forward momentum towards its pre-established goal of resolving a plot hole involving the Death Star. NTopplaywriting characters, including Cassian Andor, were introduced quickly but thoroughly enough to be cared for, making their inevitable demise emotionally devastating. Disney creating a multi-season series to dig deeper into the already moving act of sacrifice by Cassian Andor feels tangential to the Star Wars saga at best and damagingly unnecessary at worst.
