Abstract

Autoimmune disorders have always been a topic of interest in the general public as well as in the medical fraternity .There are various types of autoimmune disorders that are reported every year. The exact mechanisms behind these disorders are still not known. In these conditions, the immune system of the body becomes abnormally overactive. The antibodies that are supposed to protect the body against infections and kill pathogens, start attacking the body’s own tissues. Let’s discuss them in detail!

Auto Immune Disorders

Introduction

Several numbers of autoimmune disorders are reported every year. Some of the most common autoimmune disorders are as follows: Rheumatoid arthritis, Rheumatic fever, Vitiligo, Pernicious anemia, Diabetes mellitus type-1 etc. Most of the autoimmune diseases are not diagnosed initially. It takes a very long time to be diagnosed properly.

Symptoms

The patient presents various symptoms according to the condition. Various common symptoms can be fatigue (the person feels extremely tired), low-grade febrile condition etc. The person may experience trouble concentrating and numbness, tingling sensation in fingers. The patient also complains of skin rashes and excessive loss of hair. The specific symptoms will majorly depend on the type of autoimmune disorder; he/she is suffering from.

Diagnosis

There are various tests done to properly diagnose the condition. One of the most important tests is the antinuclear antibody test. The Antibody antinuclear test (AAN) is a test that the majority of doctors suggest as soon as the symptoms of the patient suggest an autoimmune disorder. If the result is positive, it confirms that the patient is suffering from an autoimmune disorder. But it cannot specifically diagnose which type of autoimmune disorder he/ she is suffering from. There are various other tests performed that depend on the symptoms, which are performed to know the specific antibodies present or absent in the body.

Treatment

As the patient suffers from various symptoms like swelling, redness, etc. the therapies are used accordingly. Majorly the medications include NSAID(s) (Non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) and immune modulating drugs. Rest of the treatment will depend on the ongoing symptoms.

Ayurvedic Aspect

The contemporary view of autoimmune disorders explains that the immune system works abnormally and starts attacking its own cells. According to the Ayurvedic point of view, the food consumed is considered to be the component that nourishes the body. So, when there is any disturbance in the digestion of the consumed food. It will result in accumulation of undigested food (aama) which further results in formation of toxins. The excessive accumulation of these toxins will lead to diseased conditions of the body. It is possible to reverse autoimmune disorders with Ayurvedic herbs, a similar process is involved during a type of disease associated with aama , manifestation which is the result of vitiation of vata & kapha which have a variety of antagonistic properties. These conditions can arise due to a variety of factors such as: Adhyasanna which refers to intake of food before the previous meal is properly digested. It could occur because of adharniye vega dharana i.e. suppressing the natural urges of the body etc. When a person consumes food that is not compatible with the body (viruddha-ahara sevana) will lead to formation of ama (toxins due to accumulation of undigested food). It can be caused due to genetic factors which can be related to beejabaga dusti. Irregular appetite will also lead to digestive issues and resulting in formation of ama (toxins due to accumulation of undigested food). Aalasya which can be related to laziness will result in decreased digestion hence leaving behind undigested food. Excessive fasting which can be related to abhojan will also lead to formation of ama. These conditions can be reversed by restricting the person from disease causing factors. Also, with these precautions, Ayurvedic medicines, personalized way of lifestyle and following the suitable dietary stuff & behavior will help to relieve the condition. Clinical presentation or symptoms may include the following-mala vishtambha (stasis of fecal matter), jakrahat (Stiffness), thakavat (Fatique), shirashool (Headache), murcha (Fainting), bhram (vertigo),prishtha, katigreh (backache), jrimba (Yawning), angmarda (Malaise), chardi (nausea and vomiting), arochaka (Anorexia).
