Canelo Alvarez picks the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world after himself

Canelo Alvarez picks the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world after himself
Mexican is looking to rebuild his legacy after defeat to Bivol

Canelo Alvarez believes he is “the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world”. The Mexican is the current undisputed champion of the super middleweight category after defeating Gennady Golovkin in his last fight.

Canelo fought twice in 2022 and he lost the first by unanimous decision to Dmitry Bivol, then in September he returned to the ring and finished the trilogy against GGG. The Mexican successfully defended his WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO super middleweight crowns.

Since then he has not fought, and despite losing to the Russian, Canelo claims he remains the best in the world today, even though the badge was taken away after the loss to Bivol.

A reporter from YouTube channel ESNEWS, accosted Canelo and said, “You’re the pound-for-pound king, who’s second?”

Alvarez was quick to answer this question, looking towards the heavyweight division.

“There are a lot of good boxers out there, but I think Tyson Fury deserves to be, also Usyk,” Canelo told ESNEWS.

In the same ESNEWS video Canelo commented that he has just started training for the upcoming bout, but that he will return to the ring in May or September. As for the opponent, he said that one of his goals is to have a rematch against Bivol, however, he will take his time to decide the next opponent.

Eddie Hearn, like Alvarez, confirmed that the Mexican’s return will be on Cinco de Mayo or Mexican Independence Day weekend. The promoter was encouraged to suggest that Canelo’s possible opponent would be John Ryder, who is a mandatory challenger. He also said that the fight could take place in either Mexico or England.

Manny Pacquiao to make comeback in fight with Conor Benn
A matchup between both fighters might take place despite the Brit’s drug test failures

Despite the official result of Conor Benn’s failed drug tests being made public, negotiations for a fight with Manny Pacquiao are still in progress.

Prior to his unfortunate battle against domestic opponent Chris Eubank Jr. last August, Benn, 26, failed two drug tests.

The Destroyer thought his initial test result for the illegal drug clomifene, which was negative, was “faulty,” but he later tested positive for the same drug in a subsequent test.

While he was being investigated, the British boxer went on to renounce his British boxing license. He has been attempting to clean his name for months by consulting with a doctor and a lawyer. The 270-page document supplied by Benn’s team that asserts his innocence has been the subject of a month-long investigation by the World Boxing Council (WBC).

Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the WBC, has stated that Benn is not suspended in any way and is allowed to compete. Eddie Hearn, the head of Matchroom Boxing, revealed that early negotiations for a fight between Benn and Pacquiao have begun.

“I would not be surprised to see Conor Benn fight Manny Pacquaio next, but it’s not signed. There’s been a couple of discussions, minor discussions,” said Hearn to Boxing King Media.

Pacquiao’s return to boxing

After Yordenis Ugas defeated Pacquiao in August 2021 for the WBA welterweight championship, the former eight-weight world champion Pacquiao declared his professional retirement. In an exhibition match against YouTuber and “martial arts expert” DK Yoo in December of last year, the boxing icon made a comeback to the ring.

Benn has 21 professional fights under his belt and is eager to go back in the ring after receiving the go-ahead. Hearn expressed his anger over the prolonged investigation into Benn’s test failures and claimed the British man may compete without a formal decision being made.

“He’s back in training, he wants to fight and is being told he can fight,” Hearn said. “We’re kind of holding him back for that decision, he’s saying ‘Well if this document shows my innocence and a commission will see that document and licence me, I’m ready to fight’. My question to the situation is, at what point do we say it’s enough waiting and it’s time to fight again?”

Avril almost got her wish the year before, but the champion had to face her mandatory challenger, and now it’s up to her to prove in the ring that she has the merits to face Bridges.

She respects Bridges and is excited about the idea of facing her

“She goes all out, she likes to go forward and never takes a step back, but I can also punch and move forward. I think there will be fireworks and it will be an exciting fight,” she added.

She concluded by noting that she is ready for the opportunity: “But, it’s one I’m ready for, so as soon as his hands get better, we can get started,” she said.

For his part, Bridges is ignoring the criticism. Although she has a 9-1 record and is getting better and better as a boxer, she has been criticized for her presence on OnlyFans and Instagram.

“The people who now don’t believe in me or aren’t fans are the same people who don’t believe in Floyd Mayweather. The higher you go… The higher you get, the more fans you have, the more haters they are. I’ve always been true to myself,” he explained.
