DC’s Lazarus Planet just brought back the classic ’90s iteration of a Justice Society hero who is also affiliated with the Batman Family.

The Bat-Family has been growing for decades, with new heroes and vigilantes joining the collection of friends and family at various points. In the Post-Crisis DC Universe, one of the most tenuous of these connections was the alliance between Batman and Huntress, who stood in stark contrast to Batman in some very compelling ways. The character was completely reinvented during the New 52, receiving a new personality benefiting her new role in the universe. But now, it seems like DC is reversing course on that development.

“Whisper of the Moth” from Lazarus Planet: Dark Fate #1 (by Tim Seeley, Baldemar Rivas, Ivan Plascencia, and Carlos M. Mangual) focuses on the Helena Bertinelli version of Huntress, and takes a lot of cues from past characterizations of her. While she’s been steadily becoming more like her old self in recent appearances, “Whisper of the Moth” seems to fully restore her old status role within the extended Bat-Family, and highlights elements of the character that were central to her Post-Crisis personality.

The ’90s Version of the Huntress Appears in Lazarus Planet

“Whisper of the Moth” focuses largely on Huntress, who spends the events of Lazarus Planet contending with newfound chaos in Arkham Tower. During the story, Huntress’ internal monologue reflects on her role as a “righteous bolt of justice” and “the outsider looking in.” Reflecting on how Batman has never fully accepted her as a member of the Bat-Family, Huntress faces off with numerous minor villains (including the Monarch of Menace) while making her way through the building. All the while she is contending with her own faith and her morality

In the end, Huntress ends up sparing the life of the villainous Killer Moth despite his attempts to corrupt her. Huntress contends it wasn’t Batman’s lessons or her faith in God that inspired her to keep fighting, but rather her own will and resolve to make the world a better place. It’s a solid showcase for Helena, who in recent years has been steadily returning to a characterization that used to define her, but was lost in the shuffle of DC reboots.

The Return Of the Post-Crisis Huntress

The concept of ‘the Huntress’ has gone through some reinvention over the years. The original incarnation of the character was a Golden Age hero, who’d eventually grow into the villainous Tigress. The second Huntress for most of the Silver and Bronze Age Comics was Helena Wayne, the Earth-2 daughter of Batman and Catwoman, who’d grown into her own hero in her adult years. Following the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, Earth-2 was seemingly lost, removing Helena Wayne from continuity. In her place, the Huntress was reinvented as a separate character. Helena Bertinelli was the daughter of mafia members in Gotham City, who was inspired to bring down the criminal families after witnessing the murder of her parents by rival gangsters.

Huntress stood out from the other Gotham heroes due to her harsher tactics, creating a great amount of tension between her and Batman. Her Catholic faith also played a major part in her personal dramas and ever-evolving view on morality and murder. This version of Huntress was lost as a result of the New 52 reboot, which reintroduced Helena Wayne on Earth-2 while eventually recasting Bertinelli as a spy character in Grayson. The Helena Bertinelli of the New 52 was a decidedly different character than her Post-Crisis incarnation, working alongside Nightwing in the spy organization Spyral.

It wasn’t until DC Rebirth that Bertinelli would reassume the Huntress mantle while joining the Birds of Prey. Since then, she has steadily regained her place within the extended Bat-Family (playing a role in storylines like the construction of Arkham Tower). Her Lazarus Planet storyline is a solid showcase for Huntress as she is now, and she’s got far more in common with her 90s Post-Crisis incarnation than the version who served in Spyral, which is still a piece of the current DC canon. It’s an exciting return for a character who filled a unique place in Bat-Family orbit and sets up the character for plenty of future adventures in Gotham City.
