Emile Smith Rowe’s Arsenal goodbye game denied as record £35m transfer in works
Emile Smith Rowe was expected to play some part in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth on Wednesday but was not called upon as he nears a £35million transfer
Emile Smith Rowe didn’t get a chance to play for Arsenal one last time during their friendly clash with Bournemouth in Los Angeles.
The 23-year-old forward is on the brink of a switch to fellow Premier League outfit Fulham, with a hefty £35million price tag hanging over the move. This record-equalling sum would make him the priciest signing for the Cottagers and tie the record for the Gunners’ biggest sale, currently held by Alex Oxlade Chamberlain’s leap to Liverpool seven years back.
Before he can don the Fulham shirt, Smith Rowe has got to tick off a medical and finalise contract terms. The West Londoners upped their game with a revised £35m bid that’s £5m more than their initial offer, after whispers surfaced of Crystal Palace eyeing the young striker.
Smith Rowe was all set for action in Wednesday’s match after landing a spot on the bench, but despite the array of subs, Mikel Arteta kept him sidelined. The match wrapped up with a 1-1 draw, but the Gunners triumphed 5-4 in a penalty shootout.
Arteta spilled the beans post-match, explaining: “Things are happening in the background and we decide the best thing to do was leave him out,” reports the Mirror. The deal could also grease the wheels for Riccardo Calafiori’s much-anticipated arrival at Arsenal.
After a saga of speculation, it’s been suggested the Italian defender is set for a North London adventure, with a cool £33.6m deal on the table, plus another £4.2m in possible add-ons and a sell-on clause to boot. Calafiori has made it clear that he favours a move to Arsenal, despite interest from several other clubs.
However, the deal is currently being held up as Basel and Bologna are still negotiating terms for the 22-year-old’s transfer to the Gunners. At present, half of the transfer fee is set to go to Basel, with the remainder going to Italy.

It remains uncertain when the deal will be finalised, but it seems only a matter of time before Arteta secures one of his transfer targets. For Smith Rowe, a move to Fulham represents a fresh start.
Since his debut in 2019, he has made 115 appearances and scored 18 goals, most of which were during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. During these terms, he netted 12 goals in 53 appearances, before being sidelined by injury.
Despite only making three Premier League starts since August 2022 due to his injury, Arteta was keen to keep the young star. However, it appears Fulham’s offer was too good to refuse, and he looks set to continue his career elsewhere.
