Erik Ten Hag reveals why Cristiano Ronaldo is absent from Manchester City vs Manchester United match

Manchester United COACH, Erik Ten Hag, revealed the reason why Cristiano Ronaldo did not play in the Manchester Derby match which took place at the Etihad Stadium, Sunday, October 2, 2022 WIIB evening. Erik Ten Hag said Cristiano Ronaldo was not selected because he wanted to honor the player’s great career in football.

In that match, Manchester United was beaten by The Citizens – the nickname of Manchester City – with a score of 3-6. The Red Devils – the nickname of Manchester United – were not moved by the host since the beginning of the match.

The winning goal for Manchester City was scored by Erling Haaland and Phil Foden hat-tricks. Meanwhile, three goals from Manchester United were contributed by Antony dos Santos and two goals from Anthony Martial.

Interestingly, Erik Ten Hag did not play Cristiano Ronaldo at all in this prestigious match. Erik Ten Hag only put the former Real Madrid player on the bench. Even Erik Ten Hag prefers to play Anthony Martial to replace Marcus Rashford rather than lowering Cristiano Ronaldo.

This obviously makes a lot of people question. Erik Ten Hag also answered that the reason for not lowering Cristiano Ronaldo was because it was out of respect for the player’s career. On the other hand, the Dutchman said there was an advantage behind it by including Martial.

“I would not include it as a form of respect for Cristiano and his great career,” Ten Hag said, quoted by the Manchester Evening News, Monday (3/10/2022).

“And the other thing is that there is an advantage, I can play Anthony Martial who needs minutes, but I don’t want to show it like that.”

With these results, Manchester United is still stuck in the sixth position of the Premier League 2022-2023 standings. Cristiano Ronaldo and his friends have only collected 12 points from seven matches, the result of four wins and three defeats.

Meanwhile, Manchester City continues to stick closely to Arsenal, who is currently dominating the Premier League table in 2022-2023. Pep Guardiola’s polish team collected 20 points, only one point adrift of Arsenal.
