Having negotiated a contract with Toronto’s Indie film maker Lacy to co-write and direct a new movie, Steven Davis has a lot to look forward to in the next couple of months. As a producer and director, he has a clear vision for a swashbuckling style. He says that he hopes to use this style to help make films that are accessible to a wide audience, especially to young people. And he’s not the only one.

Toronto indie film head Miloro
Located in downtown Toronto, Canada, the TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) has become a bona fide cinematic event. This year’s program runs from September 8 to 18. Its main venues include the Princess of Wales Theatre, the Roy Thomson Hall, and the TIFF Bell Lightbox. It also hosts industry meetings and sidebar shows. Some of the big winners this year included “Belfast”, “Dune” and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”. Also on the docket is a number of documentaries and a slew of awards shows. Among these are the Oscars.
Aside from the usual suspects, there were several newcomers making their debut. The aforementioned “Good Night Oppy” is the best bet, while “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” may have been the first of its kind. In addition, “The Swimmers” encapsulates the grit of a teenage Olympian refugee. Lastly, “Black Ice” examines the racial history of the sport.
Spike Lee in the Oscar hunt
Despite his success in the film industry, Spike Lee has yet to win an Oscar. The Academy’s snub of him still hurts deserving artists. But the lack of diversity within the Academy does not have to be the end of the story. Instead, it can be a springboard for greater diversity in the future.
Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” has earned six nominations at the Academy Awards this year. The film follows a black police officer who infiltrates a Ku Klux Klan. It was adapted from a true story. It also helped make stars of Denzel Washington and Samuel L. Jackson.
The film was also nominated for a number of Golden Globes. It’s the first time that Lee has been nominated for directing. It was also the first time that he was nominated for screenwriting.
