Show business legend Norman Lear will be celebrated in honor of his 100th birthday with an ABC special.
The one and only Norman Lear will be celebrated on television with a two-hour television special coming to ABC in September. Per THR, the special is dubbed Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music and Laughter, the special will feature various celebrity guests and musical performances all there to pay homage to Lear and his work in television. The news of the special, which is produced by Done + Dusted, was announced on Lear’s 100th birthday.
“Norman’s illustrious career is revered by so many, and we are honored to be celebrating his legacy with this special night of entertainment,” Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment president Craig Erwich said in a statement. “We have been lucky to work with Norman on a number of projects over the years, and it’s only fitting that his centennial birthday be marked by the biggest names in Hollywood raising a glass to toast, and perhaps gently roast, the television icon.”
Lear added, “I’ve always believed music and laughter have added time to my life. I’ve seen a lot throughout my 100 years, but I would’ve never imagined America having a front-row seat to my birthday celebration. Thank you, ABC. Thank you, Done & Dusted. Even this, I get to experience.”
Lear has worked with ABC on past projects dating back to the 1980s. He served as a producer on the classic sitcom Who’s the Boss? in the 80s and 90s. He also teamed back upw ith ABC for two Live in Front of a Studio Audience Specials in 2019 and 2021, which saw classic television episodes produced by Lear get recreated.

Ahead of his 100th birthday, Norman Lear posted a video to Twitter sharing some of the random thoughts he’s been having. He comments on the “miracle of being alive,” mentioning how he was becoming a centenarian. Lear also says he has some advice to share and he hopes it helps people for years to come, and what that is is to just always enjoy the moment.
“My god, the miracle of being alive with everything that’s enjoyable to us, and me turning 100,” Lear said. “That’s as believable to me as that I am 99.
He adds, “Whenever all of you are seeing this, that will be the moment you’re seeing it. That this is the moment I’ms aying it. And what that means to me is living in the moment. The moment between past and present, present and past. The moment between after and next. The hammock in the middle of after and next. The moment. Treasure it. Use it. With love.”
