You simply never get enough of some things. Just as Rebellion can’t get enough of developing addictive co-op games, we can’t get enough of… You get the idea, those same games!
Sniper Elite 5 Review
Once in a while, developer Rebellion comes out with a shooter that offers fun to co-op enthusiasts. For example, a few years ago there was the remake of the Zombie Army Trilogy that offered entertainment for up to four players. And then Strange Brigade and Zombie Army 4: Dead War followed. In the same vein is another series (sometimes the developer also releases something you can’t do with, like Rogue Trooper Redux, but we forget that for the sake of convenience): Sniper Elite.
The unique selling point of the Sniper Elite and Zombie Army series are the x-ray shots. A bit of a mix of the brutality of a good Mortal Kombat with a touch of Call of Duty, although Rebellion has made this completely their own and especially nasty (but tasty!) expanded. You can take out enemies (Nazis) with a sniper from crazy distances and hit various limbs. A head, a testicle, the stomach, the liver, it’s all possible. As soon as you do this and fire a shot from afar, it will zoom in on your performed action and zoom in on what that body part looks like in x-ray and… breaks, explodes – if you want to call it that. There is no nuance. Playing such a shooter during a real war just doesn’t feel real, because it’s so absurd, and that’s a good thing. The nice thing is, if you perform such a good action, your co-op buddy will also see this action.
Made for co-op
This way you can cheer each other up to make even nicer or more spectacular kills. The story of the game can be played with a buddy, as is usual with Rebellion’s co-op fun. We warn you: don’t play Sniper Elite 5 alone! The game is not intended for that at all. You can, but you are making it unnecessarily difficult for yourself. It’s frustrating and simply not fun. With every Rebellion title you can see very well how such a game is really made for co-op. It is only a pity that Rebellion does not learn and there is still no question of offline co-op. Just add that, yo! In addition, there is an additional mode where waves can be cleared with up to four players, increasing the fun for the long haul.
As for the story: you step confidently in the shoes of Karl Fairburne, during the Second World War. Very honest? We know those stories now, that doesn’t really matter in these games. Sniper Elite doesn’t offer the war stories that will make you fall straight back from your seat. It’s all about the action, working with your buddy, setting traps, discussing tactics and so on.
Extensive, but not easy
Although you have a few options, like killing X number of enemies with a gun, that’s really not the tactic you use to guide yourself through the nine chapters (there’s a tenth, but that’s DLC). The trick is to make extensive use of a sniper rifle, with which the game certainly lives up to its name and to switch to a second weapon here and there. A machine gun, for example. Although you can choose a pistol from time to time, or even perform a melee number. Anyway, consult and work together. Sometimes it works better if one is better in the foreground and takes out some people with a knife while the other is sniping at a distance. The game certainly isn’t easy at harder degrees and it even looks like more enemies than ever have been thrown into the game. And they are fast!
Just when you take the time to grab your sniper rifle, zoom in and hold your breath, sometimes you’re already too late. So it’s a matter of acting quickly. Even if that means that you make less beautiful shots. Once you die, your buddy will have to bring you back to life if you don’t carry enough med kits in your pocket, so working together really is the key to success. Incidentally, if you play on the easiest level, you can come back after an x number of seconds. Everyone can try this game, after all, the game can already be played for free via Game Pass!
Another handy tip is to use skill points that can be used in three different areas. It can be useful, for example, to provide some extra life meters, although you can also choose to ensure that enemies are automatically tagged as soon as you are hit. What do you choose? Something that only benefits you or something that might benefit the entire team? In any case, the options are nice, as is the option to adjust your weapons.
Not all shots hit the bull’s eye
The game is also on the long side, especially the first four missions take about one and a half to two hours per chapter. Then you go around it at a faster pace (and mission 9 is actually too short).
Most missions are very cool, although there is one where an inflation unit is always required and then you have to search until you weigh an ounce. It is the only mission where the momentum is significantly taken out of the game and luckily the campaign only contains one such mission. The rest of the missions are different and fun. So you are sweet with this title, which incidentally also has a multiplayer option for the real fighters.
Are there no downsides? Certainly. For example, we once had a strange bug where our player could no longer move, but was constantly petting the grass. A bit strange when the bullet is flying around your ears. And we had one bug with chapter 8 where the entire chapter had to be replayed because it was never saved. Terrible.
It must also be said that it is not the most beautiful game, certainly not on the Series X. It can go on, but when you realize how beautifully the new Horizon runs on the PS5 and on the same TV, it takes a while to swallow. Finally, it is a pity that Hitler has to be shot again as DLC and therefore extra money is required.
Still, at the end of the line, a very entertaining title remains. Do you still have a buddy somewhere? Point him to this title and get started together. Because Sniper Elite, whether it’s 1,2,3,4 or now 5, is never boring. And while you’re at it, try getting that testicle shot right away! Good luck!
