Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for Shazam: Fury of the Gods, officially debuting the film’s villains known as the Daughters of Atlas. It’s also revealed why they want to kill Shazam (Zachary Levi) and his family. Taking place a few years after the first Shazam film, the members of the Shazam Family have become established heroes in Philadelphia. However, it seems as though their magical powers are now at risk, thereby endangering the world.
Played by Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, and Rachel Zegler, the Daughters of Atlas will be positioned as the sequel’s primary villains. While mysteries persist about Zegler’s character whose name has yet to be revealed, the mythological sisters look to be a formidable force to be reckoned with. However, they may not be a fully unified force as they face the newest heroes in the DCEU. Shazam!: Fury of the Gods jumps forward a few years, with Billy Batson considering himself the leader of an established team of heroes in the DCEU. The first film’s post-credits scene set up the attack of Mister Mind, a rather unusual villain, but it seems he’s been ditched because of the time-jump. Instead, this time around Shazam and his team are going up against the gods themselves.
Warner Bros. dropped the first Shazam! 2 trailer at San Diego Comic-Con, promising a fun superhero adventure that continues the theme of family. It focuses on setup, explaining the film’s core concept but leaving a lot of question unanswered. Here are all the coolest moments and most intriguing questions. Shazam 2 will feature Billy Batson doing his best to keep his family together while also fearing the idea of getting older. As such, the Daughters of Atlas are perfectly positioned to serve as the film’s rivals who threaten to take the Shazam Fam’s power away in the new sequel. Here are the origins of the Daughters of Atlas as well as why they want to defeat Billy and his siblings.
Rather than having direct counterparts to characters in the comics, the Daughters of Atlas will instead be based on the original characters from Greek Mythology. Officially confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con, Helen Mirren will be playing Hespera in Shazam 2 while Lucy Liu will play Calypso. Having anywhere from three to seven daughters known as the Hesperides, Hespera and Calypso were both children of Atlas, tasked with protecting their father’s golden apple tree. However, these two Daughters of Atlas in the DCEU appear to be much more dangerous, wearing Greek battle armor while wielding powerful magic. As seen in the trailer, Kalypso and Hespera will recover a staff from a museum resembling the same staff that belonged to the Wizard.

Rachel Zegler is confirmed to be a Daughter of Atlas as well, though her name and exact role have yet to be fully revealed. While there is one shot that features her in gold armor, the new trailer primarily has her wearing modern, regular clothes. Combined with her youth, there’s definitely something different about Zegler’s character in comparison to her fellow Daughters of Atlas. She’s potentially on the side of DC’s Shazam Family. She certainly seems close to Billy’s brother Freddy Freeman (played by Jack Dylan Grazer). Perhaps she doesn’t agree with her sisters’ nefarious plans and wants to help Billy and company survive the dangers coming their way.
