Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has recently launched a transformation map for the future of transport in the city-state. This initiative is part of Singapore’s ongoing efforts to enhance its transportation infrastructure and ensure that it remains at the forefront of global mobility trends.

The Land Transport Industry Transformation Map (ITM) has been developed in collaboration with industry and union partners. The map outlines the LTA’s plans to provide a future-ready workforce and a sustainable and resilient land transport sector through innovation and technology.

Singapore’s metro network governance has undergone a structural revision, with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) taking on the role of asset owner and supervisor for new network construction and upgrades. In addition to these responsibilities, LTA is also providing a long-term framework to enhance network utilisation and reliability.

Simultaneously, SMRT Corporation, a leading multi-modal transport operator in Singapore, is working closely with SkillsFuture Singapore, the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), and the National Centre of Excellence for Workplace Learning (NACE) to set up a workplace learning ecosystem.

SMRT CEO, Ngien Hoon Ping, said: “SMRT pivoted learning to be more learner-centric by placing learning spaces within the workplace and promoting self-directed learning. This helps to deepen and professionalise the rail engineering capabilities.”

LTA’s efforts are part of the Land Transport Industry Transformation Map (ITM), which aims to achieve three strategic goals; creating a future-ready workforce, developing a sustainable and resilient land transport sector through innovation and technology, and improving overall connectivity for Singapore’s economy.

According to LTA, the land transport industry is a critical pillar in supporting the connectivity of Singapore’s economy. The sector relies on the efforts of over 100,000 transport workers, including railway engineers, station managers, and customer service officers, to ensure efficient and reliable operations.

LTA is partnering with the public transport operators and unions to equip workers with the skills to meet new challenges so that our workforce remains productive and future-ready.” says senior minister of state, ministry of transport and co-chair of the Future Economy Council (FEC) connectivity cluster, Mr. Chee Hong Tat.

SMRT CEO further added: “We believe in lifelong learning for effectiveness and are committed to championing continuous learning, workplace learning, and skills upgrading to nurture our staff further.”

To improve the efficiency of Singapore’s land transport system, an open innovation approach will be taken towards industry and academic partners. This approach aims to tap into various ideas and insights, which includes making data more widely accessible for all parties involved. LTA has also launched the Land Transport Innovation Portal as a one-stop platform for all innovation matters to streamline outreach to industry partners.

Conclusion

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) is paving the way for the future of transport in the city-state with the launch of the Land Transport Industry Transformation Map (ITM). This collaborative effort with industry and union partners will create a future-ready workforce and a sustainable land transport sector through the use of innovation and technology.
