Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur was born on September 2nd, (1838) in Bir Nagar near Navadwip, in the state of West Bengal in India, and was a pioneering spiritual leader, a magistrate working in colonial India under British rule, and a prolific preacher, writer, and poet. He was given the name Kedarnath Dutta as His father’s name was Bir Chandra Dutta and His mother was Jagan Mohini Devi Dasi.  On June 23, 1914, just before noon at Jagannatha Puri, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura left his body. On the Gaudiya calendar, this day was also the disappearance day of Sri Gadadhara Pandita. His bodily remains were taken from Orissa back to his beloved Godruma, amidst sankirtana, the congregational chanting of the Lord’s holy names, his remains were placed in Samadhi in Nadia, the land of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and His eternal pastimes. His headquarters and Samadhi are across the Jalangi from ISKCON Mayapur on the island of Godrumadvipa. On this particular day, ISKCON Delhi offers our heartfelt gratitude for the wonderful legacy that he left for us to continue under the expert guidance of Srila Prabhupada. Offer ISKCON Donation online to glorify Him.

There are three main achievements that are recognized as his greatest contributions to the Sankirtan movement of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

Firstly, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura is considered the pioneer and the grandfather of this Hare Krishna Movement because he started worldwide preaching by sending his book, “The life and precepts of Sri Caitanya” to the learned institutions and Libraries all over the world in 1896

Secondly, the finding the authentic birthplace of Sri Caitanya in Mayapur and personally constructing the temple of Yoga Pitha honoring the sacred landmark. He single-handedly not only reestablished the teachings of Lord Chaitanya and the Goswamis but also rediscovered the birthplace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. He prayed for a ray of Vishnu, who could assist him in preaching the message of Lord Chaitanya. It is due to his prayers we were fortunate to have Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur, who is the revered spiritual master of our Founder-Acharya,

And lastly is the legacy that he left in the form of the practical methods for preaching and expanding the Market of the Holy Name (Nama Hatta).

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura wrote almost one hundred books to explain the science of Krishna consciousness. He worked tirelessly to expose pseudo-incarnations of God and defeat misconceptions about the path of devotional service.

He served as an excellent magistrate under the British regime and solved many critical cases. It took only five minutes for him to solve a case whereas his contemporaries took two hours to solve the same. Even the British Government was surprised by his superhuman activities. Despite having so many responsibilities both in British Government and in his own family, he wrote hundreds of books, poems, songs, etc., glorifying Lord Krishna and his devotees. He gave to the world his immortal and precious works like Sri Harinama Chintamani, Bhajana-rahasya, Jaiva Dharma, Kalyana Kalpataru, Navadwipa Dhama Mahatmiya, Saranagati, etc. To view more details about his writings visit
