Organic Foods

1. Why are some plants and animals considered organic?

Foods that are grown and prepared by nature are considered organic. Some people think that organic food is good for you and the environment.

When plants are grown without artificial additives, fertilizers, synthetic pesticides or other biotechnological methods, they are considered organic. In the case of animals, it is generally required that they not be kept in a confined space for hours or days at a time, that they be fed organic feed, and that antibiotics and other similar synthetic biochemicals not be used.

Several countries define and certify organic food by different means.

2. So are organic foods ultimately good for you?

According to researchers, plants produce more vitamins and antioxidants and take better care of themselves when no pesticides are used. If you want to increase the nutritional value of your food, you should eat organic food, not non-organic food.

There is also concern that small amounts of pesticides can contaminate crops and plants and enter the human body through food. Vaccinating animals with antibiotics can be costly, as they rarely develop resistance to disease.

3. Does the environment favor organic food?

While clean groundwater and rich soils are desirable, organic farming must produce low amounts of toxic waste in the environment. It is remarkable that drinking water is not contaminated and that organisms living in rivers, dams, oceans and seas do not suffer from the use of pesticides. When toxic substances are introduced into the food web, the environment is disturbed.

Natural methods of ecological food production consume very little energy. There is also less packaging material, which usually means less waste. Genetically modified plants and animals are non-organic species that genetically contaminate naturally occurring organic species.

There is evidence that genetically modified foods produce more per hectare than organic foods. Organic products use fewer pesticides and chemicals than non-organic products, although they produce less per square meter.

4. Can you afford to buy organic?

Organic foods seem to be a little more expensive than non-organic foods because of the higher cost of the end product, but they should be cheaper because they require fewer resources to grow. An economical option is to buy organic food directly from farmers in your area. The best organic food should be grown in the best climatic conditions, but these conditions may exist in a remote corner of the world, and importing food can be costly.

Thanks to the standardization of organic preparation by authorities in some countries, organic products are clearly labeled and therefore not difficult to find. To obtain organic food, one must find local farmers who use natural methods of raising plants and animals. Food from overseas, however, remains a “gray area” for many buyers, as it is difficult to verify organic farming and in most cases they rely on the “word” of the trader.
