How to Check Whether a Loan App Is RBI-Approved Before Applying

Getting a loan from a mobile app can save time, but choosing the wrong platform can expose borrowers to hidden charges, misuse of personal information or unfair recovery practices. Before sharing identity documents or bank details, it is important to establish who is actually providing the loan and whether the lender is authorised to do so.

There are various rbi registered loan apps available in the market. Some are operated by banks or regulated non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), while others act as service providers for these lenders.

Here are eight practical steps to check a loan app’s association with a regulated lender before applying.

1. Understand What RBI Approval Actually Means

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regulates eligible financial institutions, including banks and registered NBFCs. A digital lending app may be operated by a regulated lender or by a lending service provider working with one.

Thus, the phrase RBI-approved loan app can be misleading if it suggests that the RBI has independently endorsed an app or guaranteed its safety.

The RBI’s digital lending framework places responsibilities on regulated lenders even when they work with third-party service providers.

2. Check the RBI’s Official Digital Lending App Directory

Since July 1, 2025, the RBI has maintained a public directory of Digital Lending Apps (DLAs) deployed by its regulated entities. Search for the Digital Lending Apps directory through the RBI’s official website. Look up the app’s name and check the associated regulated entity.

3. Cross-Check the App’s Website and Loan Documents

A legitimate lending arrangement should make the identity of the lender clear. Check the app’s official website and review its loan information, terms and conditions, privacy policy and customer support details.

Before accepting an offer, confirm that the lender named in the loan agreement matches the entity you researched. If the app claims to work with a regulated lender but that lender cannot confirm the association, pause the application until the details can be verified.

4. Look for Clear Loan Costs and Repayment Terms

Regulatory verification should be followed by a review of the actual loan offer. Check the interest rate, applicable fees, repayment schedule and total amount payable before agreeing to borrow.

Digital lending rules require regulated lenders to provide a Key Fact Statement (KFS) for covered loans, which include the Annual Percentage Rate (APR); it reflects the applicable annualised cost of borrowing. Charges must be disclosed as required by the applicable rules.

Do not proceed if the app refuses to explain the costs, pressures you to accept immediately or gives figures that differ between the application and the loan agreement.

5. Check the App’s Data and Permission Requests

A loan application may require certain personal and financial information to assess eligibility and process the loan. However, the requested access should be relevant to the stated purpose.

Review the privacy policy of the app and the permissions it requests. Be cautious if it seeks unnecessary access to contacts, call logs or other personal information. Never share your banking PIN, password or one-time authentication code with an agent claiming to help with loan approval.

A platform’s association with a regulated lender does not mean borrowers should ignore data security or privacy concerns.

6. Treat These Warning Signs Seriously

Some warning signs deserve particular attention before you submit an application or pay any money.

  • Guaranteed approval: Claims that every applicant will be approved regardless of eligibility.
  • Unexplained upfront payments: Requests to transfer money to an individual or unrelated account to release a loan.
  • Unclear lender identity: No verifiable legal name or inconsistent lender details.
  • Unreasonable permissions: Requests for personal information that appears unrelated to lending.

7. Know Where to Report Suspicious Activity

If an app appears fraudulent or misuses personal information, avoid sharing additional documents or making further payments. Preserve relevant evidence, such as messages, transaction records, screenshots and the app’s details.

Suspected cyber fraud can be reported through India’s National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or by calling 1930 for cyber financial fraud assistance. The RBI’s Sachet portal is another channel for reporting certain unauthorised financial activities. Complaints involving an RBI-regulated lender can also be raised through the appropriate lender grievance process and, where eligible, the RBI’s Complaint Management System.

Verify Before You Apply

Finding a safe loan app requires more than checking ratings or reading promotional claims. Identify the actual lender, verify its regulatory status, check the app’s association through the RBI’s official directory and read the loan documents before accepting an offer.

An app’s presence in the directory helps verify its reported association with a regulated entity, but it should not be treated as a guarantee that every offer is suitable or risk-free. Taking time to check the lender, costs and data permissions can help you make a more informed borrowing decision.
