My Top 5 Sydney Experiences After Living Here For 5 Years

When I first moved to Sydney back in 2016, I was stoked to explore the Opera House, the Blue Mountains, Bondi, the Taronga Zoo and SEALIFE. Classic Sydney checklist right?

But I was NOT prepared for the side of Sydney that doesn’t always get a shout out on the postcards. Our ‘Harbour City’ is chockers with weekend markets, hipster cafes, secret bars and other overlooked experiences. Some of these are smack right in the heart of Sydney and deserve a list of their own. But for now, you can check out my top Sydney experiences that includes both, the bucket-list icons and the lesser, explorer-finds that no one tells you about.

Cruise the harbour at night

I thought I’d seen Sydney Harbour. I’d done the ferry, walked around it several times, even kayaked it at sunrise. But it wasn’t until I went on one of the popular Sydney harbour dinner cruises that I realised I hadn’t really seen it. There’s something calmingly beautiful about slowly drifting past the glowing Opera House and under the regal Harbour Bridge, watching the sky transition from golden pink to the blue-ish night. The city lights start to twinkle and suddenly you feel like you’re playing the lead in a Christopher Nolan movie.

And the food? I was on a glass boat once, already impressed with the fact that the views are killer from the inside, but then came the 4-course special. Pure Sydney magic served on a plate — that herb crusted chicken and rose-infused vanilla mousse still gives me late-night fantasies (yes, still talking about the food). If there’s one touristy thing you shouldn’t skip, it’s this.

Explore the mangroves next door

I didn’t believe it until I saw it. I mean how could anyone that hasn’t visited the Badu Mangroves, believe that such bushland exists half an hour away from a city that’s mostly go-go-go! The Badu Mangroves in the Sydney Olympic Park was once a victim of industrial chemicals and toxic plants. Today, it’s a fully active ecosystem surrounded by lush parklands and connects you to over 200 species of birds!

I discovered it on a random Saturday arvo walk and haven’t looked back ever since. It’s a whole different world, where each step on the elevated boardwalk takes you through a tangle of roots, water and stillness. I’ve spotted a variety of birdlife including ducks, pelicans, songbirds and an eastern water dragon once! You can also pack a picnic and find shaded areas towards the southern end. It’s a secret nature portal locals forget exists.

Hit the streets to discover art

Art galleries are great, but nothing beats stumbling across a sculpture mid-stroll. That’s what makes the Sydney Sculpture Walk such a winner. It’s a self-guided trail that snakes through the CBD, past hidden alleys and parks, showcasing public art that’s sometimes quirky, sometimes bold, always thought-provoking.

I’ve also been on the 3-hour North Sydney Public Art Trail from the harbour foreshore that takes you around cultural masterpieces, architectural gems, public sculptures, and landscaped gardens. My favourite is the Megatron-looking stainless steel structure with mirrored panels, reflecting the surrounding skyline in trippy ways.

Summit climb of the Harbour Bridge

Enough with the ‘it’s too expensive’ flak on the Harbour Bridge climb. Sure, it’s a splurge but there are two solid reasons for that. One: you won’t get a better perspective of the city; we’re talking Greater Sydney, the harbour, the inner suburbs, islands and coves and even Blue Mountains on a clear day. Two: It’s not just a climb, it’s an expert-guided, harnessed-up, bucket-list-worthy adventure on one of the most iconic engineering marvels.

When I did it years ago, there were unexpected fireworks from the barge beneath us. A BANG, that nearly knocked our socks off, followed by the most magical display of colours and vivid patterns. You just don’t get moments like that from the ground!

Delve into Sydney’s darker side

Alright this one might be a bit too offbeat, but it’s weirdly wonderful! The Waverley Cemetery is hands-down one of the most stunning spots in the city. Located atop a cliff near Bronte, it’s got sweeping ocean views, marble angels and a kind of calm that makes you slow down. It’s also unexpectedly beautiful at night…heard it from a friend (not a ghost).

But if you’re keen to go full ghost-mode, the Death on the Rocks interactive walking tour is just what you need. It’s a ripper of a theatrical dive into Sydney’s spookier colonial past, complete with murder, mystery and a few (but fair) spine-tingling ghost tales. You’ll wander down hidden laneways and old-school pubs, trying to solve clues, trails and riddles sent to your phone. A bit creepy, but bloody entertaining!

Sydney’s way more than just pretty beaches and skyscrapers. After five years living here, I finally understand; the key lies in mixing it up, the quiet and the loud, the shiny and the shadowy. There’s always something to uncover in Sydney. So, grab a sunny, bring a mate and don those adventure caps!
